Robots Are Even Taking Work from Graffiti Artists: Tesla Hires Robots to Paint Company Walls

Art and technology have converged once again, this time on the walls of a factory. Industrial buildings are no longer defined solely by production, but also by their aesthetics. Tesla has colored its huge facility in Berlin with both traditional graffiti and a robot-assisted system. The exterior of Tesla’s Berlin Gigafactory has been transformed into a gigantic open-air exhibition.

The Tesla manufacturing facility in Berlin is the scene of an extraordinary art project. The company announced last year its decision to cover the factory’s exterior walls with graffiti. This project involved both local artists and a special robot system.

The first step of this colorful project at the Berlin Gigafactory was taken with local graffiti artists. The artists began to decorate the concrete walls of the factory with their own original designs. The resulting works have already brought a completely different atmosphere to the area. However, Tesla didn’t want to stop there and added a robot-assisted system as a technological contribution to the project. The robot system creates art on the walls with millions of dots.

The robot system transfers digitally prepared designs onto the walls using a giant printer. This system consists of a powerful computer, software that adapts the graffiti designs for printing, and a paint-spraying print head. The robot moves with Kevlar cables and stays close to the surface with small propellers to create the image with millions of paint dots. The project drew inspiration not only from local artists but also from designers around the world. Some of the graphics were developed by Tesla’s own team. The walls combine both the cultural traces of Berlin and Tesla’s production identity. The company aims to cover the entire surface of the factory with art.

The Berlin Gigafactory, which is Tesla’s first large-scale production facility in Europe, became operational in March 2022. With the completion of the graffiti project at the facility, which produces the Model Y, a striking visual transformation is targeted.
